Introduction:
Students will use their hands, mind, and heart to explore the plight of world hunger.

Math: Students will identify various amounts of coins used to purchase goods in the U.S. such as: half a dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny. The students will use these coins to purchase items that they need and want.

Math-Division: Building on the lesson “Multiplying Savings”, students will learn how the total savings can be divided up to feed a large number of hungry children.

Math-Multiplication: Students will learn how saving small amounts of money over extended periods of time can add up to a substantial quantity of money.

Social Studies and Writing: Students will write thank you cards to a family member or friend for the things they need and want.

Middle School Lesson Plans
Language Arts and History: This is a three part lesson and extension designed for eighth grade. It can be modified for individual lessons and other grade levels.

Students will work insmall groups to create an advertisement informing the public about RiceBowls. Students will perform their commercial and record it.

Graphing: Students will compare the number of orphans in other countries to the number of orphans in the United States using graphs.

Math-Percentages: Students will determine the proportion of children in our classroom that would have HIV/AIDS, be illiterate, and live below the poverty level were they to live in the US, Haiti, India, or South Africa.

Narrative Writing:
After teaching parts of plot to the class, students will write a narrative essay that portrays a child who experiences hunger.
