Mission
iThemba's mission is "to be a place of Hope for shaping future leaders." This vision includes excellence in parenting, education, and lifting up awareness regarding high risk behaviors. The leadership of iThemba is committed to "always putting children first."
Each year, the iThemba campus opens a new home, until there are eight homes total. Additionally, there are plans for 300 students to attend the iThemba Academy by 2010. By developing the potential of these young citizens, iThemba aims to make a lasting impact on their future communities.

Daily Life
Within each home, a couple serves as foster parents to approximately 6 children. Each of the children at iThemba have been identified as potential future leaders. iThemba  is intentional about developing each child spiritual, psychologically, socially, and as leaders.  In addition to quality schooling and exceptional child care, iThemba is committed to seeing each child through their transition to adulthood, including post-secondary education and establishment as contributing adults in the South African community. At iThemba, children are nurtured and equipped to reach their maximum potential with a vision for their larger community.

spacer History
In 2003, visionary leader Danie van den Heever, a retired businessman from Durham, South Africa established iThemba. "iThemba" is the isiZulu word for "Hope." Plans are underway for a new home to be established each year. Presently, there are three homes of iThemba - Esther House, Joseph House, and the newly opened Joshua House. In addition to these homes , the iThemba campus's school is growing to support the broader Embo/Hillcrest community.  Additional campus programs include parenting and health education classes. iThemba is truly impacting South Africa today and in the future!

Lively Homes, Loving Parents
At iThemba, children live in loving homes, with foster parents who are committment to their success and future.
Since Joseph House opened in 2006, foster parents Issac and Christine Mohlakwana have cared for their second family. Originally from the South Coast, the couple has already raised six biological children of their own, and now are enjoying their foster family. Issac is a retired minister, and Christine is educated in AIDS, home care, and orpahan care.
Esther House opened in 2007. In this home, Otline and Cynthia Mnteshane are committed to creating a genuine family atmosphere. This couple is well respected in the surrounding community and has a great deal of experience in HIV/AIDS education, church work, and teaching English.
At Joshua House, opened in 2008, the house parents are Shane and Lara Whitakker. The Whitakkers have worked in a variety of roles within the iThemba mission. They have two biological children and have embraced the rewarding role of parenting and extending their own family.
